Through recent customer follow-ups, we’ve found that despite the availability of instruction manuals, some users still lack a thorough understanding of mullite and overlook key considerations, which prevents them from fully leveraging its performance. Today, we’ll revisit the primary process parameters that influence the sintering‑based synthesis of mullite, in hopes of providing useful guidance.

Sintered mullite is typically produced at temperatures between 1650 and 1700°C. The primary process parameters influencing the sintering synthesis of mullite are the purity and particle size of the raw materials, as well as the calcination temperature. Since sintered mullite relies mainly on solid-state reactions between Al₂O₃ and SiO₂, enhancing the dispersion of the raw materials accelerates these reactions. In particular, the particle size of the alumina feed significantly affects both the formation of mullite and the sintering process. Consequently, thorough mixing and fine grinding of the raw materials are critical conditions for promoting the solid-state reaction during mullite synthesis. Mullite begins to form at around 1200°C and completes its transformation at approximately 1650°C; at this stage, it exists in a microcrystalline state, while above 1700°C, well‑developed crystals are observed. Thus, the firing temperature directly influences mullite formation and crystal growth. Accordingly, reaching a specified sintering temperature and maintaining it for an adequate holding time are essential requirements for synthesizing mullite.
